Allergy & Hayfever

Hayfever and Allergy symptoms are caused by an over-reaction of our bodies to certain allergens such as pollen or dust. When our bodies are exposed to these allergens, they release a chemical in the body called histamines, which result in inflammation and many of the symptoms we experience during a hay fever attack or allergy including:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Sore/ tickly throat
  • Itchy rash

We offer various prescription strength treatments to help you better manage and control your allergies and hayfever. As with most medications, they aim to reduce the amount of histamine released in the body, thereby reducing inflammation and the severity of your symptoms. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as antihistamines.

There are many antihistamine tablets available to purchase over the counter, and which one works best is totally dependant on the user. What works well for one person, may not for the other and we therefore advise trialling different antihistamine tablets until you find one that works best for you. In addition to tablets, you can also use nasal sprays and eye drops if you feel the tablets are not completely controlling your symptoms. Details of the prescription only treatments we provide are detailed below.

Fexofenadine (also know by its brand name Telfast) is the only antihistamine tablet that is NOT available to be purchased over the counter. It is generally considered a non drowsy antihistamine, however as will all non-drowsy antihistamines, it can still cause drowsiness in some people. It is taken once a day, and usually effective for allergy sufferers who can’t find an effective antihistamine to purchase over the counter.

We offer 3 different types of prescription only nasal sprays:

  1. Steroid nasal spray – (Beconase & Avamys)
  2. Antihistamine nasal sprays (Rhinolast)
  3. Steroid & Antihistamine combination spray (Dymista)

Steroid nasal sprays help control allergy and hayfever symptoms by reducing the inflammation in the nasal passages. In order to be effective, they must be used regularly and can take a few days, sometimes a week before their benefits are seen. It is useful to begin using a steroid nasal spray before the summer, when hayfever typically is at its worst to help prevent flare ups in your hayfever. Steroid nasal sprays should not be used for longer than 12 weeks unless under specialist supervision.

Antihistamine nasal spray, Rhinolast contains the active ingredient azelastine, which helps prevent histamine release into the nasal passages and thereby reducing inflammation. Rhinolast can begin to work in minutes and can last up to 12 hours. If you already have inflammation in the nose, it can take a few days to see the effects of Rhinolast. It should not be used in combination with Dymista as they both contain the same ingredient.

Steroid and Antihistamine nasal spray Dymista combines both ingredients into one, providing powerful relief from symptoms. The steroid (fluticasone) helps reduce inflammation and can take a few days to begin to have effect. The antihistamine (azelastine) works within minutes to reduce histamine release and inflammation. You should not use Dymista with any other nasal sprays.
