Sumatriptan is an affordable and fast-acting generic medication of the popular known brand Imigran. It is medically equivalent to the branded medication Imigran with the same active ingredient but lower costs.

This is a generic product, therefore depending on availability, the brand you receive may not be the same as the one pictured.

WHAT IS SUMATRIPTAN?

The active ingredient in Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans (5-HT receptor agonists). Unlike painkillers, which reduce pain but do not tackle the issue, Triptans actively work to reverse changes in the brain that are thought to induce a migraine attack. They also alleviate symptoms of migraines.

HOW TO USE SUMATRIPTAN

Before taking Sumatriptan, please read the patient information leaflet which can be found at the bottom of this page. Sumatriptan is suitable for anybody over the age of 18 who is suffering with migraines.

You should take one tablet of Sumatriptan at the onset of your migraine as soon as possible. Do not take it before any symptoms have occurred as it is not a preventative medication and will not stop the migraine from occurring. If you experience some relief after taking the first dose and your symptoms return, you can take another tablet at least 2 hours after your first dose. If you did not experience any benefit from the first tablet, you should not take another dose.

Sumatriptan is not dependent on food, so you can take it with or without food alongside.

Sumatriptan comes in 2 strengths, a 50mg tablet and a 100mg tablet. You should start with the lower dose and move up to the 100mg tablets if you feel your symptoms are no adequately controlled with the lower dose.

The maximum dose of sumatriptan is 300mg in 24 hours

With most prescription medication there are risks of side effects, and the same is true of Sumatriptan. The nature of these side effects may vary from person to person.

Side effects may include:

  • tiredness and drowsiness
  • nausea, vomiting and dizziness
  • sensations of heaviness and short term increases in blood pressure (transient).

For more information on the side effects of Sumatriptan, consult the patient information leaflet at the bottom of this page.
