Orlistat is a proven weight loss treatment licensed in the UK. It can help you lose 50% more weight than dieting alone.

Who is it for

Orlistat is licensed in the UK for people with a BMI over 30 or a BMI of 28 with weight related illnesses such as diabetes and blood pressure. You can check your BMI here.

Taking orlistat without making the appropriate dietary changes will lead to less favourable results and possibly more troublesome side effects. We recommend you first try appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes before trialling orlistat.

How it works

Orlistat works by preventing fat absorption from your digestive system, thereby leading to more being removed from the body. When used in combination with a diet plan, orlistat can help you lose 50% more weight. Results are dependant on the individual’s diet and lifestyle, and we advise sticking to a low fat diet together with regular exercise whilst taking orlistat.

Taking orlistat without making the appropriate dietary changes will lead to less favourable results and possibly more troublesome side effects. We recommend you first try appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes before trialling orlistat.

It is recommended that orlistat be taken for around 12 weeks, after which you should weight yourself to see how you have done. If you have lost more than 5% of your initial bodyweight, then you should continue taking orlistat until your BMI is below 30 (or 28 if suffering from other weight related illnesses) and then continue with your diet and lifestyle plan.

How to take

The usual dose of orlistat is one to be taken three times a day with your main meals. It should ideally be taken immediately before eating, but can be taken up to 1 hour afterwards.

If you do not eat a meal, or you eat a meal containing no fat there is no benefit in taking orlistat as there will be no dietary fat for it to inhibit absorption of. You should skip that dose and save for another meal.

Orlistat can hinder the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, and it is therefore advised you take orlistat with a multivitamin.

Side effects

Like all medications, there are potential side effects you can experience whilst taking orlistat.  Majority of the side effects result from the local action in your digestive system. These are usually mild and experienced at the beginning of treatment and are more likely to be experienced if you are consuming high fat meals.

  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain/Discomfort
  • Bowel frequency
  • Flatulence
  • Oily discharge/stools (worse if eating food containing high amount of fat)
