HOW TO TAKE CHAMPIX
You can begin the starter pack before your quit date, and can smoke whilst taking Champix. Most people find they slowly lose the pleasurable effects of smoking after a few days of taking Champix. Ideally, you should have stopped smoking by the time you reach day 8, however you can continue after this.
The starter pack has days numbered from 1-14 and you just need to take the tablets as instructed inside the pack. The tablet can be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
Days 1-3 you take 0.5mg daily
Days 4-7 you take 0.5mg twice a day
Days 8-14 you take 1mg twice a day
If you miss your dose of Champix, simply take the missed pill as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, however, simply miss the dose completely and continue your regime as normal. You should never take two Champix pills together.
WHAT DOSAGES ARE AVAILABLE?
It is advised to begin with the starter pack of Champix, which contains 2 different strengths of the active drug Varenicline. This starter pack contains a 0.5mg dose to be taken once a day for the first three days, followed by a 0.5mg dose to be taken twice daily for four days, then a 1mg dose to be taken twice daily for one week.
Although Champix has been proven to help you quit smoking in just two weeks, it is advised that you complete the full 12-week stop smoking treatment. This has been shown to increase your chances of quitting for good from 50% to 70%.
Once you have completed the Champix starter pack, take a 1mg dose twice daily for eleven weeks.
There is a reduced dose of 0.5mg available for people who wish to taper down off Champix slowly or find the side effects with the 1mg tablets troublesome.
The most common side effect of taking champix is nausea, however you can take it with food to help minimise this.
If you find Champix is interfering with your sleep, you can take the second dose earlier in the day which may help prevent this. Alternatively, you can use the 0.5mg tablets twice a day as the maintenance dose (instead of 1mg twice a day).
Champix can potentiate the effects of alcohol and therefore should not be taken together.
Champix is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Depressed mood, rarely including suicidal ideation and suicide attempt, may be a symptom of nicotine withdrawal. If you experience any suicidal thoughts whilst on Champix, you should stop immediately and speak to your GP.
